The recent 4th T20I clash between India and the West Indies in Hyderabad delivered high-octane drama, ending in a stunning 24-run upset for the hosts. Set a mammoth target of 248 after Shai Hope’s sensational, unbeaten 102 off just 50 balls, India fought tooth and nail in the run chase.
Speaking in the post-match press conference, wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson—who provided a solid half-century at the top—opened up about the mindset behind the chase, the brilliant partnership that kept India breathing, and the exact moment the momentum slipped away.
The Chase and the Counter-Attack
Chasing a near-impossible target of 250 leaves no room for cautious cricket. Samson emphasized that the team’s strategy was clear right from ball one: aggressive intent was the only option.
While the openers laid down a decent platform, a fierce 70-run stand off just 32 balls between Tilak Varma (43) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (41) blew the game wide open and kept the Men in Blue right in the hunt.
“When you are chasing around 250, you can’t really anchor the innings. You have to go hard from the very first ball, and that’s what everyone was trying to do. As long as Tilak and Reddy were out there, we genuinely believed we could win. The equation was around 12 to 13 runs per over, and the game was very much on,” Samson shared.
The Turning Point
Despite scoring at a blistering pace and pulling off massive overs, India fell short at 223/9 in their 20 overs. Samson pointed directly to the 17th over as the decisive pivot of the match. Tilak Varma’s dismissal completely shifted the psychological and tactical advantage back to the visitors.
“The turning point of the match was the moment Tilak got out. We were right on track to seal the game, scoring 10 to 20 runs an over and playing some gorgeous shots. Reddy and Tilak handled the pressure brilliantly. Until that wicket fell, we were well and truly in the chase,” he admitted.
Praising Shai Hope and Looking Ahead
Samson also tipped his hat to West Indies skipper Shai Hope, whose brilliant century—his second of the series—anchored the Caribbean side’s massive total and ultimately leveled the five-match series 2-2.
Acknowledging Hope’s stellar form, Samson noted that the team had planned extensively for him, but class prevailed: “He is in phenomenal touch right now, and you have to tip your hat to that kind of batting. He played some incredible cricket shots.”
With the series tied at 2-2, all eyes now shift to the grand finale. The series decider takes place this Saturday at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, setting the stage for an explosive conclusion.
